5. Downloading files
If you are unsure about which files to download, we suggest you read our helpful comments on file formats, image quality etc. Please note that you can also have image files sent directly to your advertising agency/printer. This is a pay service for which you will be invoiced by Screenresort as. A price list is displayed below.
5.1 Image formats
Every photograph in our image bank is identified by a unique six-character image number. For example, one of FjordNorway's images bears the identification fn0002.
This number refers to all the image formats and files available for this photograph. To distinguish these, however, we have added two additional characters. These are shown in the table below. In addition, a suffix identifies the file type, e.g. ".jpg":
ls betyr lavoppløselig bilde inntil A5 størrelse (best til Internett og skisser), lm betyr lavoppløselig bilde inntil A4 (best til Internett og skisser), hs betyr høyoppløselig bilde inntil A5 format (kan benyttes til trykk). Andre høyoppløselige størrelser er hm (inntil A4), hl (inntil A3), hx (større enn A3).
5.2 Usage
For images to be used in Web presentations, select "ls" or "lm". For brochures, catalogues and other printed matter, you must select "hs", "hm" or "hl".
These will also provide the best results in documents produced on your own printer, because most modern colour printers offer a higher resolution than your computer screen (72 dpi).
However, in certain cases, the lower resolution images may yield more accurate colours. This is because our high-resolution image files are in CMYK format, while the lower resolution files are in RGB format, which normally has a greater colour span.
5.3 Image quality
Many of the photographs in our image bank have been specially scanned for us and are of very high quality suitable for high-quality reproduction. We have scanned them in two resolutions, so that you may scale the images to the size you are printing without deterioration in quality.
The photographs that have been specially scanned are labelled "H" to indicate "high quality".
Other images, for example those converted from a Photo CD, are labelled "M" for medium quality. However, this does not necessarily indicate that they are of lower quality, merely that the scanning has not been quality assured by our image provider, Screenresort as.
5.4 CMYK and RGB
The files in our image bank are either high-resolution CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) or low-resolution RGB (red, green and blue). The high-resolution CMYK image files are best for brochures and other printed matter. In other words, they have been prepared for 4-colour brochure reproduction.
If you use other printing processes, please let us know. Screenresort as will be happy to provide special CMYK formats based on our original scanning.
5.5 Which image should you download?
For printed matter, it is always best to download the high-resolution image file that is closest to the format you are actually going to use. In other words, if the photograph is being reproduced in size A5 or smaller, you should use a file for which the last character of the image number is "s" (small).
You can also use this file type for formats slightly exceeding A5.
For internet purposes you will find that the low-resolution RGB files yield the best results. It is also best to use RGB files in MS PowerPoint and similar presentations, and in MS Word etc.
5.6 A warning about the JPEG format
Most of the photographs you download from our image bank are in the JPG format. Every time you save an image in this format it will be compressed and thus lose some of its quality. We therefore strongly recommend that you avoid saving the image repeatedly. It is best to convert the file to an image format which does not reduce the quality when you save it.
In order to reduce the risk of reduced quality, we also recommend that you burn a CD-ROM or send the original file directly to your advertising agency/printer. Please also read our comments on image quality above.
Image files that are delivered on CD-ROM or via ISDN are often in the TIFF format. Although this is also a compressed format, you do not risk reducing the image quality through repeated saves.
